Update on Home Study

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas! Ours was so nice and relaxing. Several people have been asking for an update, so I thought I'd share where we're at in our adoption process. Our visit with our social worker on Dec 11th went well and our next visit with her will be in Des Moines where she lives on Dec 30th. After that, it should take about a week to write up the report and then we'll know if we're approved. We're feeling good about it and getting very excited!! After we're approved, we'll need to raise $1500 more so we can hire our adoption consultant and start applying for birth mom situations and for grants. Things are moving along!

We were so relieved with how our home visit went! Much better than we feared. It was very nerve wracking to have someone inspect our home, especially with so much riding on it! Scott got all our smoke detectors and fire extinguisher installed. Andrea cleaned, decorated for Christmas, and made some snacks. We really enjoyed meeting Chrys! She is so nice. First, she interviewed Michael, which she said went perfectly, then we went through all the documents she requested (she was so helpful in counseling us on what to expect ahead of time!). Finally, we took her on a tour of our house. She told me I didn't need to clean that much, that it only had to look "lived in" but that means different things to different people! I prefer to err on the side of too clean, than too messy. She had all good things to say, much to our relief! We didn't have to have child locks or have the nursery set up yet, since we don't know when we'll get to bring our baby home yet. 

Our 2nd and final visit for the home study  will be a 3 hour interview with Chrys and just us two answering questions about our upbringing, our marriage, our families, and how we plan to parent. We will have more visits with her after we bring baby home, but that will depend on which state baby is born in. 

We appreciate all the love and prayers that have carried us this far and could use more prayers to cover us until our adoption is final! ♥️

Adoption Home Study

Happy Friday!! Just wanted to give you guys an update on where we're at on our adoption process. We have our first home study visit at our home next Wednesday, Dec 11th, so we’ve been very busy getting ready for that! The social worker (Chrys Bitting) will tour the house and interview Scott, me, and my 16 year old stepson. Our 2nd visit will be in Chrys's office in Des Moines and then she’ll write up a report letting us know if we’re approved. It should take about 1-2 months to complete. Exciting!! Also, nerve-wracking!! 

We’ve been busy taking pictures of donations left over from the yard sale to sell online, de-cluttering/organizing a bit, cleaning, doing fall yard work, gathering home study documents, installing some extra smoke detectors, getting some Christmas shopping done, and switching out fall and Christmas decorations. Will be very glad to relax a little next weekend!! Scott's going hunting and I'm doing some fun stuff at the church like singing Christmas carols at nursing homes and helping with the kids' PJ party!! Love this time of year!!

Update on Donations from Yard Sale!

I finally finished up valuing our yard sale leftovers that we donated to multiple charities! Turbo Tax has this great online tool called Its Deductible that lets you keep track of your donations throughout the year and estimate the value of donations to make it easier at tax time. Where has this been all my life!?

The Grand Total was $8,411.50!! Wowza!! It all added up and it was totally worth tracking all of it for our tax return!! Since charitable donations reduce your taxable income, it's not dollar for dollar tax savings, but that means we will see about $2000 in tax savings. That will help us so much! Thank you again to all of our friends and family who donated their items to our sale!!

Leftover Donations: Making the Most of Our Blessings

It's been a busy couple of weeks since the yard sale!! I've been returning borrowed tables and canopies and itemizing leftover donations. Because of our seriously generous friends who donated items for our sale, we had a TON of donations leftover, which I felt compelled/responsible/called to donate to organizations that are important to us and to ensure that we receive the tax deductions on our tax return. Our friends donated their items to us, giving up their own tax deductions, hoping it would help us adopt our baby, so I want as much of the donations going towards our adoption as possible. Tax savings = more money to adopt our baby!!

I spent a lot of time thoughtfully and prayerfully considering which non-profits our donations would go to, and in the process, I learned more about these wonderful organizations in our community! I feel so grateful that I was able to contribute to them! Read on to learn about the places who received all of our leftover donations and their important missions. Much more important than emptying my garage so I can park in it this winter, but that is a huge plus. :)

The Salvation Army is great because it's a Christian organization and they donate the items they can't sell to people who need them, rather than just throwing them away, like other organizations do. They received our furniture, household, and kitchen items.

Lakota Journey is an important mission we support at Cross Point Church. A group of ladies drove over to the Indian reservation in South Dakota recently to visit them and provide new coats and gently used clothing for the people this ministry serves, so I pulled some coats and cute/warm winter clothes out of our leftover donations for them to stuff in their mini van (pictured below).

Pregnancy Resources is an organization in Davenport that provides free resources to moms and dads to help them when they don't have what they need to raise their child. They provide so many different resources, including parenting training, diapers, and free ultrasounds! We donated baby items, stuffed animals, and clothes for ages 0-3T to them.

Life's Little Treasures is a thrift store with lots of cute stuff of all kinds on Brady St in Davenport which donates all proceeds to QC Right to Life. They received our kids' clothes and toys for ages 4T+ and some framed art. I bought my cute little "Welcome" pot holder for my front porch there!

Closet 2 Closet is an organization in Rock Island that was built, in part, through the adoption of preteen foster children. They offer, free of charge, all-season clothing, accessories, and hygiene items exclusively for foster teens. They will be receiving our adult clothes, shoes, and bags from our leftover donations after I deliver them tomorrow (and then my garage will finally be empty!!).

Dress For Success is another awesome organization that provides professional work clothes and guidance to help women get jobs and support themselves. They received some very nice dresses, blazers, and dress shoes out of our leftover donations.

Bettendorf Public Library is where my stepsons spent a lot of time after school before they got licenses and vehicles, so they received 10 boxes of books! Note: books are generally not deductible on your tax return, but a library is always a good cause! Another good cause is the Rock Island County Jail. A lady from work is collecting paperback books for a Christian ministry that supports this jail, so I pulled out 2 boxes of paperbacks to give her! Note: I did let my stepdad Dan who owns The Source Books used bookstore in downtown Davenport have first dibs on what he can sell at his store. This picture is what was left AFTER he picked out what he wanted!! We had TONS of books!! I built up some serious ab muscles hauling these boxes around, haha!


We also set aside several higher value donations that we thought would sell better online, so we're still working on getting prices set and pictures taken and loaded online. Expect to see lots of Facebook Marketplace posts from me soon! Planning to start on that next week! We're getting closer to bringing our baby home!!

Tips on Donations to Multiple Charities

  1. If you have the time and desire, consider donating your leftover items to multiple nonprofit charities that are important to you or you know have the greatest needs. Google has a wealth of information as well as Facebook. It feels awesome when you can spread the love!
  2. When boxing up leftovers from your garage sale, decide which types of items are going to which charity and write on top of the box which charity the items go to. Be sure to set boxes going to the same charity in the same spot and keep them separate from the boxes for other charities. This will make it helpful for when you are ready to itemize (write down the types of items and the number of each type) and then drop off donations.
  3. Be sure to itemize the donations for your tax return at home or take pictures of the items to itemize later. There is often not enough time to itemize when you're at the site of donation.
  4. Be sure to ask for a receipt for your donations just in case you were to ever get audited by the IRS someday. Keep your itemized list attached to your receipt in your taxes folder.
  5. The highest value items for tax deductions would be clothing, shoes, bags, coats, bedding, rugs, lamps, TV's, and furniture. Books are not tax-deductible with a few exceptions, so be sure to do your research.   7. After you've itemized the items in a box, place a yard sale sticker on the side (or some kind of sticker) so you'll know if you've already gone through the box. I went through my boxes in my living room over a couple of weeks while watching Grey's Anatomy. Highly recommend! Hehe

Our Yard Sale Success!!

You guys...God provided for us in a huge way...we raised $2900 this past weekend on our yard sale and bake sale!! Amazing!!! We are so, so grateful!! We could not have done any of it without our amazing volunteers who worked their butts off, friends who donated items, and friends who loaned us tables and canopies!!! It was SO MUCH work, but wonderful to know it was all worth it! We felt very loved and encouraged that so many could help us bring our baby home.


Speaking of our friends who donated items...we FILLED a 26 foot U-Haul with donations from over 15 families!! Thank goodness we had just enough tables!! We sold about 2/3 of the donations, even though it started storming around 2pm on Saturday. The canopies seriously came in handy! They gave us time to get the donations inside so they weren't ruined. Friday was our biggest day, but we still made about $800 on Saturday! We made another $100 on Sunday selling leftover baked goods items at church...wonderful idea and so sweet of our friends to coordinate! We were too exhausted to go anywhere Sunday except to return the U-Haul, haha! Speaking of which...a kind soul paid for half of our truck rental!! We really felt God's presence and love throughout the whole weekend! We are truly blessed :)




We decided not to do another sale since we don't have space to store leftover donations until Spring, so we decided to donate the leftovers. We decided to split them between Salvation Army (household items and furniture), Pregnancy Resources - a local nonprofit that provides resources to people who decide to parent but can't afford it (kids clothes, toys, and baby items), and Closet 2 Closet - a local non-profit who provides clothes for teenage foster kids (adult clothes and bags). We will keep receipts for our tax return of course. :) We also held back several high value items to sell online for the adoption fund, so we will likely have even more sales coming! Will keep ya'll posted on the grand total!


What's next: 1) finish itemizing receipts and running donations to charities 2) sell leftover donations online 3) get our house decluttered and cleaned up 4) start our home study (which we can afford now, YAY!!!)  5) start our next fundraiser to raise the rest of our $5000 goal so we can hire our Christian Adoption Consultant, apply for grants, and start applying for birth mom situations!

We talked to a lady at our sale who works at the Davenport Knights of Columbus, and she gave us a great idea: host a trivia night fundraiser! She thinks we could get a discount on the space, so we're going to look into that next! That would be so much fun and hopefully less work for our friends and family. :) Check out all these donations we had!! It was wonderful how kind and generous most people were. It was exhausting, but at the end of the weekend, our hearts were overflowing.

Yard Sale Week!!

Get excited!! It's yard sale week!! I have been busy picking up donations, sorting donations into Boxes by category, deciding on my plan for pricing items, ordering balloons, buying supplies and making signs. I feel like I should post a blog after all this busyness dies down to share what all I've learned. It's all coming together nicely! I really could not have done this without the help of some really amazing friends and God's grace. We are so so blessed!! Hope to see some of you Thursday night to help set up or at the sale Friday and Saturday!

Garage Sale is coming along!!

Happy Sunday! Just thought I'd give everyone an update on our garage sale progress. My friend Karin, my sister Jen, and my niece Tricia took advantage of the gorgeous weather yesterday and came over to help organize donations by boxing up like items for a couple of hours and we got a lot done! Yayyy!!! But still have a lot to do! We have donations from 10 families and have a whole month to collect more!! This is gonna be a sale you DON'T want to miss!!

Update on Fundraising

Progress!! We are making progress, folks! There's a saying "you wanna hear God laugh, tell him all about your plans." So true. However, I (Andrea) prefer to think of it this way: that God has better plans than I could ever come up with and he smiles as things fall into place perfectly, knowing it's working out for everyone's good, and not just my own. God is good, ya'll.

Our fundraising plans have changed a little bit. Rather than having 2 separate sales for handmade items and a garage sale, we decided to combine them into one big sale! We're feeling much more peace about this, so it must be God's plan. :) Here's an update on that:

  1. So far, we have received garage sale donations from 7 families, including ours! Several others have contacted us with stuff to donate at some point as well. Yay!! We need as many donations for the sale as possible to reach our first goal of $5,000! We're already sorting and pricing stuff as we receive it, but could use some help with this. Also, if you are crafty and have handmade items you would like to donate for the sale, please let me (Andrea) know!
  2. We already have several friends and family who have volunteered to help us with the sale! We are truly humbled and grateful, you guys. It feels amazing to know that people care about and are supporting our mission: giving a baby a loving home and family. This kid is going to be SO LOVED by SO MANY!!!
  3. We have decided on a location, date, and times for our garage sale! See the below graphic for details. Save the date!! Update on Scott's Famous Ribs: we found out that we would need a license to sell his ribs, which requires more of a financial investment than we feel like is responsible right now. What we would like to do is host a dinner somewhere, probably at our home, serve his ribs and other sides, have silent auctions and raffles, and sell tickets to attend. Several of you have asked about buying his ribs, so stay tuned for more details. We need to figure out a location, date, recruit helpers, etc. We are SO EXCITED about this idea, and have done a ton of research, so this is coming soon, hopefully in October or November before the holiday season!

Baby steps...

We have our first garage sale donations! Yay!!! So grateful!! I'm gonna be honest here... I'm also overwhelmed (Andrea here). There are SOOO many decisions and details to manage, and life gets busy! 

I have been trying to plan our handmade items sale and garage sale, but I'm stuck in the Port of indecision. I still need to schedule and plan these events, but I'm still mulling over details and getting organized (I'm sooo Type A). 

So when my sweet friend Kathryn, who is moving very soon, said she has a truck load of donations for our garage sale, I was a bit hesitant. Where would I put it? Should I plan the garage sale before the handmade items sale? Should I wait to accept donations? 

Then I came to my senses and realized I have a garage for storing donations! I can park in the driveway for a while. Totally worth it!! 😀 I need to take what I can get! It was so sweet of her to think of me and want to help us. Maybe it'll get me out of my indecisive funk. So, I picked up my first load tonight, and then had a moment of panic... Where in my garage is this going to go? Should I put it somewhere else? It has to be tonight, or the items will get wet sitting in his truck (no pressure). 

I decided I needed to chill out, so I sat on my porch swing, took a few breaths, and prayed, and I heard God tell me "it's all OK. Just take the next baby step...just do something. I don't want you to worry, you can always move the stuff later if you need to. You'll figure it all out later." Then, I got up, moved my car, and unloaded the truck in the garage. I did it!! I took the next baby step. A step in the right direction! And I'm ready for more donations!! 

I'm sharing this so you all can learn from my experience... when you feel overwhelmed or anxious about something, you can always pray and be comforted. Just take the next baby step and you'll get there. 😊

Adoption Fundraising

Hey everyone!! In our previous posts, we talked about why we're so excited about adopting and gave you some details on our adoption plans and costs. We also shared our goal of raising $5,000 by January 1, 2020 to pay for the home study and the Christian adoption consultant. This post is about how we plan to partner with friends and family to raise funds and include ya'll in our journey to bring our baby home!!

We did an analysis of our expenses from the last 6 months and will continue monitoring our budget to cut back as much of our non-essential expenses as possible. We will also use our God-given talents to make extra money and will apply for several grants, but we need some help (and prayers!) for the rest. We would be ever so grateful for your support!!! We will keep you posted on our progress. 😊

We've done a ton of research on adoption fundraising. There are hundreds of great ideas out there!! We've read several blogs from couples who adopted and have been able to raise thousands of dollars with these ideas! It is amazing that so many people are so supportive of couples hoping to adopt!! We wish more people knew about all the resources available and considered adoption as a possibility!

Here are our plans for fundraising (100% of proceeds go directly to our adoption fund):


  1. Sell Andrea's Handmade items. Andrea has made several beaded necklaces, bracelets, earrings, decorative picture frames, decorative wood signs, essential oil diffuser bracelets, and essential oil diffuser rearview mirror hangers. She is planning to sell these items on Etsy and Facebook, and is planning a handmade items sale along with other friends who make delicious baked goods and unique hand-made crafts to raise funds for our adoption.     • Note: the funds received WILL count towards the adoption tax credits!
  2. Take orders for Scott's Famous Ribs. Scott's smoked ribs are famous among our friends and family! Scott is currently planning his approach to making and selling his Smoked Ribs and other BBQ meats and will be taking orders to raise funds for our adoption soon. Stay tuned for more details!
    • Note: the funds received WILL count towards the adoption tax credits!
  3. Donated Items Garage Sale. We will gladly accept (and pick up!) donations of garage sale items from friends and family to sell at a large garage sale, either at our house, a friend's house, or at our church. We will also go through our home and donate as much as possible to the sale. We will need volunteers to help us with preparations and at the sale, so if you can't contribute monetarily, you can donate your time! We're still working out the details, so stay tuned!
    • Note: any proceeds on donated items will NOT count towards the adoption tax credits, but WILL help us pay for adoption costs!
  4. T-shirt Fundraiser.  https://www.bonfire.com/ will work with us to create a custom design for t-shirts related to adoption, like "Love Makes a Family" for example. We will then send out the link to friends and family so they can place their order online, and Bonfire will ship the t-shirts directly to the customers. The difference between cost and price paid will be paid to us and go directly to our adoption fund. This is an affordable way for folks to contribute and get a cool t-shirt! As a bonus, it could be a conversation starter to spread awareness about adoption! We will start this fundraiser after our home study is completed. Stay tuned for status updates!
    • Note: any proceeds we receive will NOT count towards the adoption tax credits, but WILL help us pay for adoption costs!
  5. AdoptTogether.org. This non-profit organization is like GoFundMe, but WAY better because it's only for adoptions and they verify that the donations to our adoption fund are used (by us) for valid adoption expenses. This is an IRS approved 501c3 organization, so donations are tax deductible on donors' tax returns if they itemize deductions. Also, if a donor's employer does charitable donation matching, they could double their donation to our adoption fund! AdoptTogether also has matching grants that they give to some people! Donating to this fund is a good way for friends and family that live out of town to contribute, or people who maybe aren't interested in purchasing handmade items, t-shirts, or BBQ or don't have time to volunteer at the garage sale. Every little bit helps bring our little one home and we are sincerely grateful for anything people can donate!!! We will start this fundraiser after our home study is completed. Another important way you can support us is to cover our family and our future birth mom (and family) in prayer. We want to make sure that God is glorified through our journey and that He is guiding our steps and providing a way to bring our baby home. We also hope that others would be inspired to adopt children! The birth mother (and possibly father) of our future child is facing a difficult situation, so we need to pray that they would be surrounded with peace in knowing that God will take care of them and this precious baby, and give them healing all throughout the adoption process. Also, please cover all birth families and adoptive families in prayer, as they step forward in faith believing that the Lord is good and that babies' lives are precious.

Our Adoption Plan


We can't wait to bring our baby home!! This is probably how our dogs will feel about it, but they will definitely adore the baby! The short version of our adoption plan is that by January 1, 2020, our goal is to save and raise $5000 to get us started with the adoption process and get our home ready for the arrival of our blessing. For the next 6 months, we will work hard to bring in extra income, get our house ready to bring the baby home, and clear some extra room in our budget. After our home study is approved, we will apply for grants and hold fundraisers to raise the rest of funds. We are hoping to complete our adoption by the end of 2020. We will keep our friends and family updated on our journey and provide helpful info for anyone who might be considering adoption or is just curious about the process. Read on for details. :)

Christian Adoption Consultant
We have decided that we want to hire a Christian Adoption Consultant, Dawn Wright from http://www.christianadoptionconsultants.com/. One of Andrea's friends from her infertility support group (connecting with her is another amazing blessing that came out of our infertility journey!) hired Dawn to help her adopt her adorable baby girl and she couldn't say enough positive things about Dawn. We love the idea of hiring a Christian Adoption Consultant, first of all because it's a Christian organization, and also because they have developed relationships with adoption agencies all over the country that are ethical and won't try to scam you out of money. The agencies they work with will refund most of the fees you've paid if the birth mom decides to keep and parent her child.

Having a wide network of agencies gives them a much faster placement rate than the national average of 2 years. The organization's average time to place a child in adoptive parents' custody is 6 months from the time of the home study completion. Some adoptive parents are matched with a birth mother within days or weeks! Andrea's friend was matched within 3 weeks of her home study completion, and she took her baby home 3 months later! That's so encouraging!! We've already waited SO LONG for a baby that the thought of waiting 2+ years to bring home a baby seems excruciating!! This gives us so much hope!!

Another reason we want to hire Dawn is because the agencies her organization works with require that birth moms receive professional counseling/therapy before and after birth, which is not only good for the birth mom, but also leads to a much higher success rate (vs failed adoptions). We love that these agencies provide this level of care to birth moms. We cannot imagine how hard it would be to give up a child. Even knowing that you're doing it to give them a better life, it would still be super stressful, and we would need counseling if it were us!

Dawn has helped other families with 120 adoptions over the last 5 years, so she has lots of experience and knows a lot about avoiding "red flags" or questionable situations which can help to protect our finances (and our emotions). She will also help us with filling out grant applications which increases the likelihood of being chosen for them, due to her extensive experience. Additionally, she will help us create a profile which introduces our family to birth parents and helps them choose a couple to adopt their child. You can imagine how important it is that our strengths as parents shine in this profile! Dawn will also pray with us, help us apply for situations, communicate with agencies, give guidance on adoption finalization, and answer our questions throughout the entire process. She has already answered several of our questions, and we haven't even hired her yet! It just makes us feel so at peace to know someone like her is helping people adopt!! There are SO many details. It is quite a complex process.

Here's some background on how this process works:

  1. When we save up enough for the home study fee, we will fill out and gather lots of paperwork.
  2. A social worker will complete our home study: a background check, interviews, financial review, physical exams, review of certified legal documents, and inspection of our home. This will likely take 1-2 months.
  3. When we save up enough for Dawn's fee, we will sign a contract with her and talk with her about our plans.
  4. We will create our profile, ask Dawn to review it and make suggestions, and we will print several copies of it.
  5. Once our home study is complete, we will review "situations" (birth mothers placing a child for adoption) and apply for a situation that suits our family. The birth mother will receive a copy of our profile and may reach out and ask us questions.
  6. If the birth mother chooses us (there could be multiple couples applying for the same situation), we are considered "matched with a birth mother." If she doesn't choose us, we can apply for another situation, and so forth. We could possibly have additional conversations with the birth mother and develop a plan for what happens after the birth of the baby.
  7. Then we wait until the baby is born and travel there. We will meet the baby, but the birth parents have a certain amount of time (between 12 hours and 3 days depending on the state) to terminate their rights. In some cases, the adoptive parents are invited to be present at the ultrasound appointments and at the birth! It's not for every situation, but we think that would be so amazing!!
  8. Then a social worker places the baby in our custody and we travel back home with the baby. 
  9. Then we receive a few more social worker visits and wait until the court date for the adoption finalization hearing, which takes 3-12 months, depending on which state it's finalized in. 

Expected Costs
Andrea's support group friend spoke highly of Chrys Bitting, a social worker with Adoption Associates of Iowa, which is a nearby home study agency approved by Dawn's organization. Their home study fee is $1500. Dawn's fee is $3500, which we think is well worth it for all of the above reasons. These two expenses total the $5000 we're working towards to get started!

Once the baby is born and in our custody, the largest fee will be due to the adoption agency. This could range between $20,000-45,000, depending on the situation. Overall costs may include court and legal fees, pre-adoption and post-adoption counseling for birth parents, birth parent legal expenses, adoptive parent preparation and training, social work services needed to
match a child with a prospective family, interim care for a child, and post-placement supervision until the adoption is finalized. The birth mom's medical expenses are usually covered either under the birth mom's insurance, Medicaid, or under our insurance. The agency fee is known at the time we apply for a situation, so our budget amount will depend on how much funding we receive (grants, fundraising, etc). We will also have travel expenses related to picking up the baby and bringing them home, but these are far less if we adopt domestically rather than internationally, which factored into our decision to adopt domestically.

We expect our total adoption expense to be between $26,000-40,000, with a good chunk of it being covered by grant funding. There are over 80 grants we can apply for, which is awesome!! Also, Andrea's employer will give us $5000 reimbursement after the adoption is finalized, which will be so helpful! Another really great benefit to help us afford our adoption are the federal and Iowa state adoption tax credits. In the tax year 2019, the tax credits apply to adoption expenses up to $14,080 for federal and $2500 for state that we pay out of pocket but excludes any employer reimbursement and fundraising donations received. The earliest we would receive tax refunds for these credits would be when we file our 2020 taxes. I have more details, so just ask me if you're interested!

Exciting Announcement!!

We have an exciting announcement to share...we decided to begin the process to adopt a baby!!!

As many of you know, we have struggled with infertility for the last 4 years. It's been the most heartbreaking experience we've ever endured, but some good has come out of it. Andrea has received so much support from her Christian infertility support group called Bearing Hope that she wanted to give others the care that she had received, so she agreed to take over leading the group for the last couple of years. She has been able to support women through the difficult journey of infertility and miscarriage, and even helped one woman find the doctor that helped her get pregnant! We have also grown stronger in our relationship with each other and with the Lord, and our faith has grown so much. This journey has reaffirmed for us that God always brings good things out of bad situations. Genesis 50:20 says "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving (or creating!) of many lives."

We have both always had a strong desire to grow our family. When we got married 5 years ago, we were led to pursue having a biological child, but we always said we would love to adopt a child if we're not able to conceive. God's calling in our lives sometimes looks different than we expect so we must step forward in faith believing that His plans for us are good, and even better than we could imagine. After much prayer and research about all of our options, we have decided to stop our infertility treatments and pursue domestic infant adoption! We are so excited!!

Why is adoption so exciting you might ask?

  1. We love kids!! We love our kids, the kids in our families, our church family’s kids, our friends’ kids, and we sigh and smile at random cute babies in public. We totally adore all children and could easily love another's child as our own. Andrea has poured out her love to her stepkids since her stepdaughter H was 3, who is now almost 23, and she's been loving her stepsons for the last 6 years. Also, Scott and Andrea each have 2 adopted cousins, so both of our families are experienced at loving and accepting adopted children as our own. Andrea has loved teaching Sunday school to preschool aged children and helping with Vacation Bible School for the last 7 years, and everyone says the kids love her too! Scott is a baby whisperer. He picks up crying children and they fall asleep on his chest. We were made to love kids!!
  2. There are so many children out there needing to feel loved and a family to belong to. We could provide a loving family with a mom, a dad, 3 older siblings, several grandparents, and lots of extended family members. We also have a safe and comfortable home, an awesomely supportive church family, and two of the cutest and sweetest border collie dogs who would all love them like crazy. How awesome is it that we could give all that to a child who may not otherwise have any of it!? We cannot wait to share with a child everything that we've been blessed with.
  3. We have waited, prayed, cried and hoped for so long that we would have a child to nurture, love, support, and raise up to know the goodness of Jesus and to be a light in this hurting world. We have delighted in raising our kids: Andrea's stepdaughter H from a previous marriage (22) and Scott's sons M (16) and G (18), and now adoption gives us a chance to raise a baby together! It's a dream and a calling we've both shared ever since we each separately told God that we wanted whatever He wants for us, since He knows what's best for us better than we do, and He placed that desire on our hearts before we even met.
  4. As Christians, it's our responsibility to care for orphans. James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Not all of us are called to adopt, but we can support those who are called! What a great opportunity to live out our faith!
  5. If we as Christians believe that life begins at conception and unborn babies should be treated the same as babies outside of the womb, then we need to step up and support the moms who choose life. We can do this by caring for a birth mom's child and supporting the birth mom's needs, like her medical and legal/adoption expenses, professional counseling, and prayer needs. Supporting a birth mom who is making this incredibly selfless, brave, and difficult choice would be such an honor!

One of the number one reasons a lot of people don't adopt is the extremely high cost, which includes birth mom support. Adoptions can cost anywhere from $20,000-50,000, depending on domestic vs international and depending on the adoption agency. I would guess that not many people have that much money just sitting in their bank accounts ready to spend. We sure don't! With such a large sum, we will be borrowing some of that amount, but we of course want to be fiscally responsible about it.  However, what's really exciting and what a lot of people don't know is there are several resources available to help people afford the high cost of adoption, including grants, tax credits, and amazing organizations that will help people raise money to help with the costs. We will talk about these resources and explain why adoption costs so much in future posts very soon!

We have been blessed with great jobs, and are capable of affording to raise a baby, but infertility treatments have greatly reduced our savings. We plan to apply for several grants, but we are also going to need some help from our friends and family with the costs. Never fear, we have a plan! Stay tuned!!
